My first duty, and a most pleasant one, is to express my sincere appreciation of the honour you paid me in my election as an Honorary Fellow, and when I see, in the Report of the Edinburgh Obstetrical Society, the list of Honorary Fellows for the last ninety-six years, the inclusion of my name thereon makes me all the more sensible of such an honour. In 1934 out of every million women alive in England, 1590 died of cancer. Thus, assuming the death rate to remain unaltered, if you were in a cinema in which there were 628 women one of them would die of cancer within the year.
